After a successful Cupcake War in Family and Consumer Sciences classes (FACS), the winners have been determined. Students were tasked to come up with a company name, create a slideshow, decide what cupcakes to make and how to decorate them, and find a recipe. Throughout this process, students were faced with challenges, but overall enjoyed the experience.
Frosting the cupcakes turned out to be one of the more challenging tasks.
“I found that making and piping the frosting was the most difficult because it required the most focus and skill,” said 8th grader Kathryn W.
Another student, Amalya M. also found it hard to make the frosting the right consistency.
One thing many students found to be their favorite part of the competition was getting a chance to try their creations. But they also enjoyed seeing what others came up with.
“I liked to see all the other peoples designs because I thought they were very creative,” said 8th grader Frankie W.,
After careful consideration by a variety of judges throughout the building, the company that won cupcake wars was the Cupcakery, which included members Kathryn W., Kai, Camilla, Nicole, and Kenny.
They chose to make devil’s food cake cupcakes with creamy vanilla frosting and a chocolate heart on top as decoration. Kathryn was modest about the win, suggesting that she was surprised, since she was impressed with the other groups.
The students we talked to felt the competition was fun, and are already thinking about what they might change if they were to compete again.
“I probably choose a different flavor,” said 8th grader Calliope M.
Cupcake Wars were an enjoyable experience for those participating. Many students enjoyed prepping, making, and eating their very own homemade cupcakes.
