Although exploring new stores is great, a lot of teens have specific stores that are built into their routine whenever they are at the mall or shopping online. Some of these stores are Nike, Chick-fil-la, and Ulta.
“I usually buy makeup or clothes from Tysons Corner and Sephora, Pacsun, Hollister, Lululemon, and many other brands,” said Jenny K., a student at Longfellow.
Two other students, Yeonseo K. and Sareena P. both agreed that Sephora is their go-to store whenever they are shopping and that it is popular among others.
According to Lexingtonlaw, a credit repair company, teens enjoy shopping online in stores such as Lululemon, Pacsun, and Amazon.
The reason behind these trends, according to Kelsie, a blogger on Teenagers With Experience, a platform by and for teenagers, is self-confidence.
“We see makeup as covering up any flaws that we don’t want people to see and maybe making us more beautiful and physically appealing than we already are,” Kelsie wrote.
In addition, according to Apparel Resources, a clothing and textile industry magazine, teens also spend the majority of their money on clothes because they feel that clothes help them express themselves, and they also want to follow trends.
LexingtonLaw says 27.7 million US teens spend about $63 billion annually. Some get money from a job or they receive an allowance for doing chores.
“I babysit kids and I get paid $20 an hour,” said Sareena.
While Sareena gets most of her money from a job, Yeonseo and Jenny get a lot of their money from their parents and family.
“I use my mom’s card through Apple Pay,” Yeonseo stated.
“I usually get money from my parents as a gift from Christmas or New Year’s,” said Jenny.
Regardless of where it comes from, the money spent by teens is an important part of the economy.
