Longfellow is home to over 1000 students taught by a hard-working staff dedicated to helping those students learn. Teachers’ actions, lessons, and relationships with students impact their learning and attitudes toward school. This regular feature will focus on a favorite teacher chosen in conversation with students.
P.E. teacher Stephanie Carter was singled out by several eighth graders because of her lively, sweet personality, and her focus on healthy mental and physical aspects of life.
“She’s really nice and chill and respects the students,” said 8th grader Marie C. “She’s just generally a friendly person.”
Ms. Carter’s passion for teaching brings her to Longfellow where she loves to teach students healthy lifestyles and steady futures.
“I had teachers growing up that I really admired and who were always there for me. I still talk to them to this day, actually, so I just wanted to be a positive influence in kids’ lives,” said Carter.
Ms. Carter has had a lifelong passion for athletics, so teaching Physical Education was an easy choice.
“I’ve been around sports my entire life. I played sports through college, and then taking that teaching sports and teaching Healthy Lifestyles to students is very important to me and that’s what I wanted to do so combining the two.”
Ms. Carter did her student teaching at Longfellow, and the positive relationships with the students and teachers here definitely influenced her decision to apply when a position opened up.
“I really like the teachers here, and I like the students. I like the community, so I decided to come back,” said Carter
Students seem to like Ms. Carter’s stricter teaching style as much as they admire her kindness, she definitely commands respect, according to some students, while smoothly running her P.E. class.
“She sets people straight,” said student Jolyann MC.
“She tries really hard to make everyone included and it’s just a good place; no one’s upset,” said Marie.
In conclusion, Ms. Carter is a lovable teacher in the Longfellow community, with a goal to inspire young minds to do what they do best. She goes above and beyond to make her classes fun and engaging, and genuinely cares about her students’ well-being.
