This 2022 Major League Baseball (MLB) season was very exciting for MLB fans all over the world, maybe not for our Washington Nationals fans, though. With records being broken, mind-blowing trades, and lots of winning, here are some predictions that Longfellow students made before the MLB Postseason.

Stone Bakewell, a seventh-grader, predicted that the Seattle Mariners would not be able to beat the Blue Jays on October 7th. Bakewell thought the Mariners would not perform well enough with Jesse Winker on the 10-Day Injured List. Taylor Tramell replaced Winker in the line-up. Winker was not able to play the Wild Card game. 

However, the Blue Jays also had player injuries; Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Santiago Espinal were both placed on the 10-Day Injured List.  The Mariners were victorious.

Though they made their way to the American League Division Series (ALDS), they lost that game in a thrilling 3-0 series to the eventual World Series champions, the Houston Astros. 

At the American League Championship Series (ALCS), Stone was rooting for the New York Yankees.

“They have very good chances of winning the ALCS,” Bakewell said. “They have a very good overall team,” Bakewell thought that Aaron Judge, Yankees outfielder, would do well in the playoffs. 

Even though Judge had a 62-home run season, the most in AL history, he did miss some key contact, making the fourth four-strikeout playoff game in MLB history.

Seventh grader Carter Jones was also rooting for the Yankees.  He felt that Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton were two of the key players on the team, meaning that they would lead the team to the ALCS.

“I think it is very likely that the Yankees will get to the American League Championship series because they have many star players,” he stated.

Ryder Kulik, a seventh grader, stated that the Yankees had extra support players to help them get to the deep playoffs.

Surprisingly, the Yankees lost in the ALCS to the Houston Astros, which was the team that won the World Series.

Kulik believed that the New York Mets and the Atlanta Braves would face off in the playoffs at some point, and they did not, but the Philadelphia Phillies played the Braves in the ALDS and knocked the Braves out. The Phillies won that matchup and made it to the World Series.

On November 2nd, the Houston Astros threw the second no-hitter in World Series history. They threw a combined no-hitter and a 5-0 win against the Phillies in World Series Game 3.
